Jessica Vansteenburg

Jessica Vansteenburg is an ethnomusicologist and clarinetist specializing in music of the Hungarian-speaking community. She will join the University of Arkansas as Visiting Instructor of Musicology in Fall 2021. She previously taught at Luther College, Salem State University, and the University of Colorado Boulder. Her current research is a multi-site ethnography of Hungarian music festivals in Transylvania. Her earlier work on Hungarian clarinet music introduces performers to a historically- and culturally- informed analysis of selected works for clarinet and piano based on Hungarian folk dance. Dr. Vansteenburg has appeared in orchestral, musical theater, chamber music and solo settings throughout the US and internationally. She has also performed throughout the Denver area as a company dancer with Flamenco Fantasy Theater. She earned a PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder, a DMA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a MM in clarinet from Ohio University, and a BA in music and English from Luther College..
